Good morning everyone!! I thought I'd let you guys in on a little something that I've been planning for a while now and I have finally made the decision. I've decided to go back to school! I'm really excited but nervous at the same time. See, I went straight from high school to work for my dad's lumber company. I took a semester in graphic design about 8 years ago and I took a few months of cosmetology school...but it's been almost 10 years since I had to even think about integers and algebra and fractions!! Oh my!! I got a real reality check when I started studying for the placement test. Yikes!! I forgot what it was like to study for a test. I can't believe how much I've forgotten! It's so funny because I used to tutor math when I was in high school! Okay so I tutored general math just for an easy class...but that's besides the point.
Of course, as I get with every event in my life...I'm excited about new outfits and school supplies!!! I will have to have something cute to carry my books in!! How about this cute flamingo tote from Anthropologie?? So adorable!!
Or this bag from Coach. Sigh...Rather pricey for a bookbag...but hey, I'll be carrying it often! A girl can dream right? That's what I love about blogging! :)
Coach pencils??? Yes, please!!
Anyway, I am going to school for teaching. I am torn between teaching early childhood or special needs. My heart is telling me special needs but I'm scared to death! It's such a huge responsibility but I really feel like that's what I should be doing. There are so many things throughout my life that has led me to that. I am just deciding to follow this a little late! Better late than never though I guess! Since I don't have any credits, I will be taking 2 years at a community college then transfering to the university for the last 2 years. I am hoping I can go full time while still working for my dad. He says he will definitely work with me so I'm thankful for that!
The next obstacle is money! The fact that I don't have any. Hahaha. I am really praying that I am eligible for grants or scholarships of some sort. As soon as I take my placement test, I will meet with an advisor to talk about money and enrolling. I think summer classes start in July so I need to hurry. I'm sure I can get loans but I would like to get as much free money as possible!! Of course...who doesn't? So do y'all have any advice on grants, school, teaching...? I'd love to hear what y'all think and get some inside scoop!!
That's great!! I made the decision to go back to school a couple of years ago and now I'm just a few months from completion. It's been quite the journey! My degree is in elementary education, but we've focused quite a bit on special needs education. One thing you could do is get your degree in elementary education and then do a masters in special education. That way you could get a taste of it before you make a decision, and you'd be qualified to teach either mainstream or special education classes. Good luck to you!!
ReplyDeleteyeah!!!!!! It is so exciting going back to school....you'll enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI love those bags :)
good luck,
beth
That is SO exciting!!! :-D I would def. suggest special needs...Not only will you be guaranteed a job, but it will be SO rewarding...It takes a special person because is is hard work, but it is SO worth it!! And I have those coach pencils...They are a must!! ;-D You're so cute with those bags...I keep migrating to new ones because I can never decide on one ;o) And I will HAVE to check out that lacoste giveaway...Thanks!! :-D
ReplyDeleteGood luck girl! That coach bag is amazing! I hated hated HATED college algebra. I talked my advisor into letting me take double science in lieu of math and they agreed, thank God! I mean, I had to take business math because I have a business degree, but that was super easy because it was real life situations, but I would have failed miserably in college algebra! I think it would be sooo fun to be a teacher, I wanted to get my teaching certification in high school business, but my state changed the regulations and I can't do that anymore. I have no advice on money for college. I wasn't eligible for grants and only eliegible for a VERY small amount of govt student loans so most of mine are private and I will be paying for them for 20 years (17 now!) But it is worth it. Sorry this is so long, hope you have a great day!
ReplyDeleteYay, good for you! I've just finished my masters - as you well know! It was a long, hard slog, but ell worth it now it's finished. I also wanted to go into teaching, but I decided against it in the end. Good luck to you; I just know you're going to do great!
ReplyDeleteFirst - Yay for going back to school!! That is exciting!! I actually find that I like college now that I am in my mid 20's alot more than when I started straight out of high school ( I decided to switch my major 3 years into my schooling!) I think you will really find it more rewarding this time around!! I hope that everything works out for you money wise! I am sure that it will ; ) Goodluck!!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! That's exciting, and smart to go back now. I'm not sure about grants and stuff, but I'm sure there are some good programs for teachers. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThat's so amazing that you're going back to school! Good for you for following your dreams and pursuing what you feel like you were meant to do. That's so commendable. I think you deserve the Coach bag! Good luck with grants and loans. Keep us posted on everything.

Congratulations! That's so great and such a hard thing to go back to school after working in the real world. Love that coach purse too!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on going back to school, what a big decision! As far as paying for school goes, most scholarships and grants have deadlines a few months before the semester that the expenses will be paid, so you may not be able to get too much for summer, but can apply for fall and spring. I would also suggest taking your pre-requisites at a community college. Their tuition is far less that a state or private university. Best of luck and keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteYou are going to love it! School is really a great place to meet a variety of people from all over. I am excited for you!

ReplyDeleteHow exciting! I have my Masters in Early Childhood Education so I know you'll love going back to school for education :) I think it takes a special person to be a special education teacher but it is so rewarding!
ReplyDeleteThat is SO exciting! I finally decided to go back to school online after figuring out that normal colleges aren't for me. Right now I'm making a 4.0 Feels SO good!
ReplyDeleteAs for money, your adviser will be REALLY helpful in figuring out what's best for you.
Good for you! Like you said, better late than never indeed. I think you should follow the little voice in your head steering you towards special education. Not everyone is cut out for that but the ones that are are true inspirations.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, seeing your list of school supplies made me long for a new Trapper Keeper - do you remember those?! I couldn't wait to pick mine out each year.
